Don’t SEL Yourself Short: Teaching SEL strategies helps your students AND you!
Health and Physical Education IS Social Emotional Learning. We have been teaching and encorporating SEL strategies into HPE for years. This sesison will help you to be an advocate for your program and students; add to your SEL "bag of tricks"; and to give you strategies to remember to take care of yourself while taking care of your students.

PLAQUE ATTACK. GERMANJI. SUGURATOR -- 3 New Games that teach Health + Nutrition!
I teach at a school that heavily emphasizes interdisciplinary teaching approaches and has presented a fun challenge in our PE program -- how can we connect movement with meaning beyond mere muscle and sweat. Could kids actually compound their learning -- engaging in science and physiology WHILE sweating? I took the challenge on and have thus since developed three solid games that teach different aspects of the body processes and systems.

IMMUNE SYSTEM. here is a link that breaks down my very first "interdisciplinary" game that taught about the immune system. https://www.thepecloset.com/blog/pe-subject-integration-game-germanji-teaching-immune-system?fbclid=IwAR2R3Q2IPQbAeRemSpywgKISycvjTRvxO5m1A8BJhcKwcNHWHI2-jL3a7eQ

SUGARATOR is an awesome high-cardio game that teaches about essential nutrition building blocks: vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins and illustrates the negative impact of sugar on the body's ability to process food it needs to fuel well. (i have not made a video illustrating this yet)

PLAQUE ATTACK is a teaching game that allows kids to walk through an imaginary circulatory system pretending to be blood cells that are particularly keen on delivering their "truck loads" of oxegyn to the brain before they circulate back to "fill up." As the body chooses food that builds plaque, the highway for the trucks thin and soon classes were able to have a visual representation of potential stroke or heart attack victims -- those that might be at high risk of clotts and oxygen deprivation. (It was particularly satisfying to have one of my 4th grade classes deliver the best response thus far. At the finale where the blood cells are lumping up because of the cholesterol that has clogged up the highway of the artery -- several kids raised their hand suddenly and started exclaiming: WHATEVER SHOULD WE DO TO NOT CLOG OUR ARTERY HIGHWAYS?! - this set a beautiful environment for a section on nutrition and the important of clean eating.

If there was time in the presentation, i have a 4th potential game but would like it to be an interactive section to help show how i approach a brainstorm section and actually have breakout groups build a brand new game on their own. I would provide basic parameters and elements to draw from and then create a QR code for a google form to allow groups to submit any inspired game development.

Inclusive Health and Wellness programs
Special Olympics Arizona introduces two inclusive programs for:
Young Athletes is an all-inclusive sport and play program for children with and without intellectual disabilities ages 2-7 years old. Young Athletes welcomes children and their families into the world of Special Olympics through:

Motor skills: Children with intellectual disabilities who took part in Young Athletes developed motor skills more than twice as fast as others who did not take part.
Social, emotional and learning skills: Parents and teachers of children who took part in the Young Athletes curriculum said the children learned skills that they will use in pre-primary school.
Expectations: Family members say that Young Athletes raised their hopes for their child’s future.
Sport readiness: Young Athletes helps children get ready to take part in sports when they are older.
Acceptance: Inclusive play helps children without a disability to better understand and accept others.

SOAZ's Healthy LEAP into Fitness (HLIF) program is modeled to include health education, class activities, and group workouts! The curriculum is designed to be taught in an eight-week format. HLIF focuses on four pillars of health: emotional, nutritional, physical, and social that are each comprised of three lessons. Participating coaches/teachers are given a manual with complete health lessons and tools, and every participant receives a playbook with space to take notes, complete activities, and set personal goals. This program is completely free and can be implemented in person or virtually.

The Power of play: Using PE as RX for the epidemic within the Pandemic
During this session Tim Warnock will share his perspective on the role Physical Educators can play in addressing the mental and emotional health crisis that was at epidemic proportions before covid. He will touch on the journey to SB 1468 The Mitch Warnock Act in honor of his son. The place that exercise, and mindfulness has played in his journey through cPTS. Tim will share various techniques he is implementing within his class currently. The Be Nice program will also be featured during this presentation as well. This session will touch on some very difficult subject matter but will also provide you perspective and tools that empower students to turn to exercise for coping mechanisms. You will leave with some tools and resources that you can use to reduce suffering, inspire joy and save lives from an upstream approach.

Neuroscience Leads the Way- Regulating the Nervous System
Neuroscience Leads the way will be a tremendous breakthrough session. I have had the opportunity to share Self Regulations practices and Yoga for teachers and students for more than a decade. In this session Educators will leave with effective tools that can be used in any setting at anytime. The educators will learn how to align breathing techniques with movement that immediately improve focus and they will discover the dynamic relationship between the body, spine, emotions, thoughts and actions. We will break down the understanding of Neurodevelopment to gain an understanding of the impact of trauma in various stages- and how to implement trauma sensitive practices. As a former Educator of 10 years I learned quickly that self regulation and stress management was a missing piece among teachers and students and I've dedicated my hearts work to these practices for self growth, focus and a new confidence.
