Are you underutilizing your website?
Based on current research (Kahan, 2019), it is apparent that schools are underutilizing websites to convey PA/PE information. This session will NOT actively teach how to use websites, nor will it shame teachers for not having one! However, it will present the problems we are seeing and also the exciting potential these websites have to bring physical education out of the shadows and into the google searches of parents, administrators, and other interested stakeholders. Furthermore, it will point educators to user-friendly website creation options, preferably with low to no cost; as well as talk about the potential information to include!

PLAQUE ATTACK. GERMANJI. SUGURATOR -- 3 New Games that teach Health + Nutrition!
I teach at a school that heavily emphasizes interdisciplinary teaching approaches and has presented a fun challenge in our PE program -- how can we connect movement with meaning beyond mere muscle and sweat. Could kids actually compound their learning -- engaging in science and physiology WHILE sweating? I took the challenge on and have thus since developed three solid games that teach different aspects of the body processes and systems.

IMMUNE SYSTEM. here is a link that breaks down my very first "interdisciplinary" game that taught about the immune system. https://www.thepecloset.com/blog/pe-subject-integration-game-germanji-teaching-immune-system?fbclid=IwAR2R3Q2IPQbAeRemSpywgKISycvjTRvxO5m1A8BJhcKwcNHWHI2-jL3a7eQ

SUGARATOR is an awesome high-cardio game that teaches about essential nutrition building blocks: vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins and illustrates the negative impact of sugar on the body's ability to process food it needs to fuel well. (i have not made a video illustrating this yet)

PLAQUE ATTACK is a teaching game that allows kids to walk through an imaginary circulatory system pretending to be blood cells that are particularly keen on delivering their "truck loads" of oxegyn to the brain before they circulate back to "fill up." As the body chooses food that builds plaque, the highway for the trucks thin and soon classes were able to have a visual representation of potential stroke or heart attack victims -- those that might be at high risk of clotts and oxygen deprivation. (It was particularly satisfying to have one of my 4th grade classes deliver the best response thus far. At the finale where the blood cells are lumping up because of the cholesterol that has clogged up the highway of the artery -- several kids raised their hand suddenly and started exclaiming: WHATEVER SHOULD WE DO TO NOT CLOG OUR ARTERY HIGHWAYS?! - this set a beautiful environment for a section on nutrition and the important of clean eating.

If there was time in the presentation, i have a 4th potential game but would like it to be an interactive section to help show how i approach a brainstorm section and actually have breakout groups build a brand new game on their own. I would provide basic parameters and elements to draw from and then create a QR code for a google form to allow groups to submit any inspired game development.

Creating Connection with Cooperative Games
What builds resilience?  Connection!  If you are like most educators, you have been trained to teach skills.  These skills maybe academic, motor, and or behavioral in nature, and you may have noticed that some students are really skilled, and we call these students "good students with good families." While other students seem to come to us without these skills. These students have been labeled, "bullies or victims/mean or whiny." Learn how connection instead of elimination will build your school team, tribe, or family into a more functional, compassionate community.

This presentation will use activity, connection, teacher talk, and collaboration to allow participants to learn current research, experience connection, learn connecting activities and modifications for their students, staff, and community members.  Educators, parents, professional development specialist, and administrators are the target audience for this presentation.

Tennis in No Time: How to Introduce Tennis to Your Students With No Courts Required
Tennis has long been thought of as an elite sport, and one that is hard to bring to your schools without tennis courts or prior knowledge of tennis. This could not be further from the truth! You can easily bring tennis to your students in non-traditional spaces like gyms or blacktops, using modified tennis equipment to ensure all kids stay active and have success. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is here to help you introduce tennis to your students with free K-12 curriculum co-written by SHAPE America, free tennis equipment, and more resources. 4 million new players picked up a racquet during the pandemic, and it’s easy to see why - tennis is a naturally distanced sport that you can enjoy for a lifetime! Join us for a session where you’ll learn how to modify tennis to teach in your PE classes to students of all ages and abilities. During the session, you’ll get a chance to participate in various activities from the K-12 curriculum and learn how to set up tennis in various classroom settings. We will also cover how to receive the free curriculum and tennis equipment for your school.

Special Session: Bands, Bodyweight and Beyond
Pre-adolescent and adolescent children are not small adults. Children are at various levels of physical and psychological development. The physical educator must consider this when designing and implementing a resistance training program for young students. An exercise program should be an enjoyable experience, with successful outcomes that encourage participants to continue lifelong physical fitness activities.
The physical educator must be able to apply exercise movement options that meet the student’s level of physical ability and gradually progress the program. This presentation will examine the safe progression of proper exercise movements and provide options using body weight, bands and machines when designing a progressive resistance training program for students. Learn by doing and get in a good workout!

Creating Ambidextrous Kids
Using tennis balls, we will demonstrate drills that build and improve hand-eye coordination and catching skills, motor skills). These ball drills will help to eliminate any dominant/inferior hand tendencies and are useable for all grade levels and genders. Many life skills can and will become easier if we can do with either hands. As an ambidextrous person, I regularly rely on using both hands equally and with proficient skill. As a motor skill session, these drills can be used as a warmup prior to exercise or as part of a holistic fitness program.

Fitness Education: Low Tech Online, Flipped, and Hybrid Learning
The COVID pandemic required teachers to become remote learning instructors almost overnight.  In the aftermath of the pandemic, it is clear that remote learning will be more prevalent in schools. While most teachers now have experience and expertise in remote learning, learning about available resources can be useful. This presentation will provide information about teaching online fitness education classes using your personal computer and available online resources (with or without a learning management system).  The use of these resources can also be useful in hybrid classes and flipped learning as well as in normal face to face instruction. Practical suggestions for instruction using all types of learning will be presented.

Changing Fitness for All
Fitness and fitness training have come to rely on training muscles to improve muscle function. This divides general population into muscular goals when instead we should be focusing on joint movements which are more inclusive for everyone. Instead of dividing genders into the goals of their muscles, use joint movements as a guide to create a more inclusive workout and fitness style that teaches a lifetime or fitness possibilities through teaching the fundamentals of how our joints control our muscles through joint movement and action.

Neuroscience Leads the Way- Regulating the Nervous System
Neuroscience Leads the way will be a tremendous breakthrough session. I have had the opportunity to share Self Regulations practices and Yoga for teachers and students for more than a decade. In this session Educators will leave with effective tools that can be used in any setting at anytime. The educators will learn how to align breathing techniques with movement that immediately improve focus and they will discover the dynamic relationship between the body, spine, emotions, thoughts and actions. We will break down the understanding of Neurodevelopment to gain an understanding of the impact of trauma in various stages- and how to implement trauma sensitive practices. As a former Educator of 10 years I learned quickly that self regulation and stress management was a missing piece among teachers and students and I've dedicated my hearts work to these practices for self growth, focus and a new confidence.

Create a Growth Mindset Physical Education Learning Environment
Many schools are adopting a Growth Mindset approach to teaching and learning. The "I can't", and lack of motivation to participate is evident at all levels in PE. My presentation includes Carol Dweck's research on the two mindsets (fixed & growth). I identify what these mindsets look like in the PE setting and how to make minor adjustments to your activities and lessons to help students adopt a growth mindset in physical education.
